One easy way out of any requirement to obey scripture is to say, “every one determines their own truth”. But that assumption about spiritual truth is out of alignment with scripture. It’s left over from our life before Christ.
A more nuanced approach might be to clarify by saying, “Well, you can make scripture mean whatever you want it to. That’s just your interpretation.”
That would make sense if God’s revelation were non-sensical… if it were just a bunch of colors on a piece of parchment. But He chose to reveal Himself in a linguist and historical context. These natural rules that we use everyday in language our discussions of the past become our guides as we look for the natural meaning and author’s intent.
